Our 50-year-old Armagnac Tourné is a history lesson in a bottle. Distilled from 100% Baco grapes in Bas-Armagnac, it was bottled at its original cask strength of 41%.
Tourné ceased production in 1979, and the last two remaining casks date from 1973 and 1974. The 72 bottles, exclusively for The Bottle Shop Heilbronn, come from the 1974 cask – a piece of Armagnac history.

On the nose, Eau de Gascogne—that's what we would call a perfume from the home of Armagnac. And it would smell exactly like that: dark fruit, plum-like, and like a bucket of sour cherries spilled on the floor, its juice splattering everywhere. Add to that a strong hint of old, gnarled vines that have provided the raw material for France's oldest brandy for generations; let's call it umami. Or rancio.
The same image is repeated on the palate, only more intense and beautifully complemented by notes of aged leather and spicy cigar wrappers. Here, too, we think of acidic wines and dusty vineyards, joined by corks from sherry bottles and tipsy tarts with stone fruit stones.
Despite the relatively low alcohol content, the finish is very long but unobtrusive, like carefree flipping through photos from a Gascony vacation.
